Welcome to the IntellectAbility Academy!
Our online courses and webinars provide training that aren’t found anywhere else. They give learners of any educational level the ability to recognize signs and symptoms and empower them to do something about it.
These disability studies courses are intended to provide direct support & professional training for clinical and non-clinical staff, including medical students and caretakers. We recommend using these DSP training courses as a supplement to our other intellectual disability resources in order to provide the most effective person-centered support possible to patients with IDD.

The Fatal Five Advanced
This course is designed for clinicians. It covers each Fatal Five item with greater depth with an eye to precise signs and symptoms and greater stress on health and safety repercussions. It stresses how to train staff on each item and how to help staff act as a set of eyes and ears so that health issues can be reported clearly as they happen.

The Fatal Five for Case Managers
The Fatal Five for Case Managers includes the bulk of information from the Fatal Five Fundamentals courses with added direction on how to use this information as a Case Manager. The message is “just because you are not a clinician does not mean you cannot clinically advocate for someone.” All quizzes and scenarios are geared toward helping a Case Manager understand how they can use this information to increase the health and safety of those they serve.

Person-Centered Thinking seeks to help supporters keep the person at the center of all supports given while promoting positive control in the life of the person. Person-Centered Thinking empowers anyone to live the life they choose, in the community they choose, at the level of involvement they choose.

Curriculum in IDD Healthcare
This course was created and delivered by a physician for physicians and other clinicians. These six modules provide physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and physician assistants with pertinent, practical information that can be put to use immediately in their practices to improve outcomes.

How to Manage Choking
This course was developed in partnership with The Arc of Florida with the goal of helping Direct Support Professionals, families and caregivers of persons with I/DD understand the causes of choking, who is at risk, how to mitigate that risk and what to do when it happens. Learn what to do in complex choking situations such as those with cerebral palsy or morbid obesity.

Physical and Nutritional Health Supports
This course teaches both direct support staff and clinicians such as occupational and physical therapists how to apply the principles of their crafts in a person-centered manner throughout the 24 hours of the day.
